Look, I don't care which religion you subscribe to, or don't subscribe to. I care about how you treat other people first and your beliefs last, located somewhere after your preferences in music or beer, probably right between your sexual orientation and bowel movements on the list of things I give a shit about.
Yet, you constantly have athletes like Tebow praising God every time they score a touchdown, hit a home run, score a knockout, etc. Not only is it annoying, it is the ultimate display of ego run amuck. If you were a real Christian, I would think that to claim God gave you that touchdown pass isn't just you being a douche, it is also kind of sacrilegious. To assume that an action in a sport which has no real value other than entertainment, bragging rights and financial gain was the result of the favor of any almighty being is what some would consider to be "the sin of presumption". To assume that your 80+ yard touchdown pass was the result of some type of divine intervention is to not only cheapen the idea of God, but also to suggest that God has his/her priorities seriously, seriously out of whack.
So, I suggest this. Next time you want to thank God for a home run or a touchdown, that's fine. However, instead of dropping to one knee and all that, how about backing that thanks up with something that matters, like a check to a charity? It might make you appear like slightly less of a douche.
When Tebow talks up his faith, I always think of the HS football game I attended in 1987 where the invocation included a blessing on the pig that gave its life for the ball. Tebow is steeped in that culture & is a genuine creature of it. That's what makes it so maddening: he really does think Jesus is behind every touchdown throw.
ReplyDeletelove this! i think the same thing when i see people post things on fb like "pray for me today ... i have to take a test," or "pray for me ... i have a migraine." really? god REALLY cares about your stupid math test or temporary discomfort? grrrr ....
ReplyDeletei'm not a christian, but i used to feel much more charitable towards them. it's getting harder and harder ...
I will concur that Religion is like a penis but the "Tebowing" doesn't bother me and to tell you the truth, I can't see what the fuss is all about. I know religious people who inject God or make praises in regular conversation. As an atheist I don't share the same views but I acknowledge that to them, every positive thing that happens in their life is the result of their God blessing them in some way. I think it's the fault of the media (this blog included) that has made this into an issue in the first place by mentioning it non-stop. Why can't people who aren't interested just ignore it and keep their focus on the game? If we stopped talking about it so much, the cameras wouldn't pan to him every time Tebow gets down on one knee. There are more important things to focus on.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we're a couple of generations out until the religion thing becomes the minority. As people become smarter and smarter it becomes harder and harder to believe in something based on 2000 year old beliefs. I think notquiteRR is being just a bit hard on Mr. Whiskey. This sort of self serving religipop has to be pointed out so the contrast between what is real and not is evident.
ReplyDeleteMy main point was with the MSM. I don't watch football and know almost nothing about it,but I certainly know who Tebow is, which team he plays for, what he stands for, what position he plays, etc., all of this simply because the guy got down on one knee. It's a Lindsey Lohan non-issue but real life-changing issues get skimmed over or just get scrolled across a chyron. It's just another point against the media being to the detriment to society, and vice-versa. My sincerest apologies to "Mr. Whiskey."
DeleteI agree with all of this.
ReplyDeleteI am soooooo amused by the AdChoices to the right of the comment box.....
ReplyDelete(okay when I posted this, the ads were ALL about finding Jesus through No We're Not Trying To Steal Your Money Wink Wink Nudge Nudge New Bible New Age Church of Touchy Feely).
DeleteBahahahaha Kathy! AMEN to that sister! LMAO!
DeleteAs an ex christian, I believe that all religions have something to offer (and science, can't forget science) and while such displays are obnoxious,I'd rather see a man get down on a knee and praise "God" then the other egotistical dances players do when they make a great play. At least he's humble.
ReplyDeleteYou lost me at Whiskey in the morning...
ReplyDeleteBravo!
ReplyDeleteBut you fail to realize that asking a christian not to wave his cross in your face is persecuting him/her for their beliefs! Freedom of Religion to a christian means they get to force everyone else to live your life according to their narrow little view of the world, while you and I get to keep our offensive ideas quietly to ourselves.
what kathy said, only double...whiskey.
