One listen was all it took, actually just the first few seconds, to realize this is going to be a different sounding album from the boys and Bridget. I've been watching Flogging Molly ever since 2000 when they opened for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and the last 10+ years has seen them go from their label of a "Guinness-soaked body blow" with the album "Swagger" to a more mature but no less intense experience on albums like "Within a Mile of Home" or "Float".
I hope that this new song will grow on me or that the rest of the album doesn't sound like Dave is just phoning this one in. I really hate to say it but while this is still far better than the majority of rock songs out there, this is definitely not one of my favorite songs.
Ok, 12 hours later and multiple shots of whiskey later, it is slowly growing on me. I think the lyrics are good but not what I'm used to. If anyone would be kind enough to post those up, I'd appreciate it.
I like it. Took a few listens, but I like it.
ReplyDeleteMusical evolution is important. Otherwise, what's the point?
It is still far better than most of the other stuff out there but I think what I don't like is the more guitar-driven sound.
ReplyDeleteIt sure is different than what I was expecting. I guess it is good to see them trying for new sounds because we all know what the old rockers sound like. Don't Shut 'em Down is growing on me, but it might take a long time to be a favorite if ever!

ReplyDeleteSaw that today. It's tough to judge a whole album by one song. I'm looking forward to it though. You know the fiddle and whistle and accordion will still be there.
Sadly, I agree.
ReplyDeleteAlexis, I see you're in Tampa. Are you coming to the FM show in Orlando. I may not like the new single but I'm sure the show will rock!
ReplyDeleteYup. I'm hitting the Orlando and Tampa shows, actually.
ReplyDeleteIt didn't even sound like Dave on the first listen, but it definitely is great that they are experimenting with new sounds.
ReplyDeleteNow that they are off SideOne Dummy and on their own label, I'm sure it will be outstanding.
Tim in DC
I used to think SideOne Dummy was a cool label but now they seem to be catering to the more hipster/emo lite genre.
ReplyDeleteThe song is still growing on me, lyrically it's good, the sound is what's still unremarkable to me.
Have seen FM dozen times...Within a Mile of Home & Flost best....this new song...sounds like Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson had a love child in 1978. I want to hear more songs...and where is Bob?! More Mandolin and Tenor banjo!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm still in shock. 7 musicians, and all you hear is the same melody. Sounds terrible. Won't be buying the Album.
ReplyDeleteWith as diverse as their sound has become, it's a bit short sighted to judge the whole thing based on one song.
ReplyDeleteAnd Manny, this is going to be FM's first album on their own label. So, we'll see.
Maybe I'm just getting old, I like the "old" sound better. Still hoping for the rest of the album to be different than what I just heard.
ReplyDeleteI'm a DIEHARD Flogging Molly fan, but I just can't enjoy "don't shut em down". I was already thinking it sounded like an Irish Green Day, and then they came in with the PA sound effect like in Holiday and it was just too much. It's like they were trying to be punk rock, but forgot that what's so cool about them is that they're punk rock without trying. Since when do they play with one simplistic melody? Literally every member is not playing their style. The drumming used to be snare based, now it almost sounds like garage rock. The guitar is extremely simplistic. The mandolin, bass AND fiddle are just following the guitar essentially note for note. It kills me to bitch like this, and I'm probably overreacting, it's an alright song, but I LOVED every album so far, I just hope the rest of this album is more like the Flogging Molly we know and love.
ReplyDeleteHonestly after waiting three years since the last album I was hoping for something a little more complex
ReplyDeleteIt sounds American as shit.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a bad Dropkick Murphy's song without their punk vocals.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of Kaiser chiefs i predict a riot song to me for some reason.
ReplyDeleteI'm not thrilled with the album at all. It's definitely more rock and a little bit bluesy at some points, and what I really love them for just isn't there. Honestly t doesn't even sound like THEY are into, like there's no passion in this album.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little sorry I bought it, I rarely buy CDs anymore, and this was a disappointment.
The album grew more on me but yes, it still feels like the passion isn't there any more. I'd still rather go to their shows than anything else but now when you go, you get to see Nate, Dennis and Bob. Everyone else seems to disappear after the show. There aren't those epic drinking sessions afterwards like there used to be.
